Now that you’ve eliminated your toenail fungus with the proper treatment, how do you avoid any future outbreaks? Are you aware of what can cause it?
Do you know what toenail fungus really is? Actually, it’s fairly common. It’s an infections that can cause not only disfiguration of your toenail, but it can even destroy your nail. The scientific name is onchomycosis, and it is caused by a fungi called dermatophytes. This fungus is similar to the fungi that cause the mold that grows in your bathroom. About half of all people will suffer from at least one case of toenail fungus sometime in their lifetime. Your big toe suffers the biggest risk, and the little toe runs a close second.
The causes of toenail fungus are:
Incorrect foot hygiene. You should always dry your feet thoroughly after you’ve washed them and use a good foot powder.
Toenail polish. Many layers of nail polish, or not allowing your toenails to breath between polish applications can contribute to toenail fungus.
You should also consider the type of shoes that you wear. Always wear well fitting shoes that are very comfortable. Tight shoes can also contribute to allowing nail fungus to grow by cramping your toes.
Make sure to wear clean cotton socks or hosiery every day. This will help to prevent any fungus that might have started from making a return visit in your socks.
Make sure to keep your nails trimmed short and straight across. The longer your toenails are, the more chance they will have to harbor toenail fungus.
When in a public shower, like in a locker room at the gym, be sure to wear shower shoes or flip flops. Others foot fungus can easily be spread by the lack of shower shoes.
Recent traumas to your toenails can also contribute to developing a toenail fungus. If you drop a heavy object on your toe, that could leave the toenail vulnerable to a toenail fungus.
Once you get toenail fungus, it can be challenging and difficult to treat. The best way to treat toenail fungus is to prevent getting it at all. Take care of your feet, and theyll take care of you.
