There is an old saying in basketball that goes something like this. “Good shooting covers over a multitude of sins.” This saying might be the most true thing in all of basketball, because in the end, the most important thing is having the ball go through that hoop. It does not matter if you are winning the rebounding and turnover battle and getting off better shots than your opponent if your shots are not going in and there shots are going in. They will still be winning. The question is, how can you be the player who shots always go in? The answer to that question is positive repetition.
The first part of your shot that must be worked on till perfection is your stroke. Your stroke is the finishing part of the shot. It is when you are releasing in. To work on it, act like a waiter that is holding up a basketball. Have a 90 degree angle in the arm pit and elbow pit. Then go straight up and release the basketball.
Now that you have the stroke down, you can begin with the next step which is the motion. This is the part that leads of to the stroke. With the motion, you will want to start with your shooting arm parallel to the ground. You then want to bring the ball into your shot pocket, elbow pointing down and forearm parallel to the ground. Then you have to lift up your arms into the waitress position and stroke the ball through the hoop. At first, this motion will be jerky as you go from one step to the next, but your goal should be to get it silky smooth like Kobe’s shot. When you bring this shot onto the court, you must also remember that your arms are guiding it and your legs are giving it power.
Since we have our arms ready to guide the ball to the hoop, we must train our legs to get the power we will need. To train your legs, sit with your butt at the edge of a chair. Then shoot the ball while standing up. Use the motion shot you just learned and concentrate on using the power from your legs, and not from your arms.
The nest step is footwork. Every basketball player must be able to shoot the ball going left, right foot, right, left foot, or a hop off both feet at the same time. To practice this, simply spin the ball out to you and do it.
Now that you have a perfect shot, you must work on it. You need some positive repetition. You have to shoot a lot of game situation shots, but good ones. You must work on shots off the pass and shots off the dribble. You must work on long-range shots and short-range shots. You must also work on shots that you know you might get in your teams offense. You can also make your own drills on work on your shots that way.
You can also do drills with using cones as your defenders. You can also imagine using cones as picks to come off of. Take a partner with you to the gym and encouraging each other to get better while pushing each other in competition. You can do what every you with your partner, but you will get off more shots than you would if you were by yourself. Never forget though, to have positive repetition.
