The study of language and human communication is a valued and worthy science. However, the people who diagnose and help to treat difficulties or challenges in communication are called speech language pathologists. An SLP is specifically trained to diagnose speech issues at an early stage. That’s why they are so important in schools.

The career path of SLPs starts with their education. Both speech pathologists and audiologists must have a certain number of courses under their belts. Typically they will learn about anatomy, acoustics and linguistics, as well as courses on counseling and parent training. They study phonetics and focus on learning about speech disorders, while also having a strong education in neurology and psychology.

A certified SLP will have training in clinical situations and settings, as well as in schools. They must spend quite a bit of time under the guidance and tutelage of a mentor in their field. With experienced help, they learn all the skills they need to help them in their future career helping others.

Speech language pathologists assess hearing, speech and language. They are involved in the prevention, identification, diagnosis and treatment of both children and adults. They educate the public and their client base on hearing impairments and communication disorders. An SLP will provide consultative advice to a team of otherwise focused professionals or they can offer more direct treatment services.

An SLP in a school setting knows that children are best assessed at the earliest age possible. Most school children are assessed in kindergarten either one on one or in groups in an informal and brief test. This first assessment test may last only five minutes, and usually involves having the child or children say their name, pronounce the names of certain items and answer open ended questions. This test is usually just to evaluate articulation, language fluency, and several other aspects of speech.

If it is found that a child needs further assessment or testing, the next phase is for the SLP in the school setting to spend about two hours with a child, one on one. The next test will include a physical examination of the mouth and throat and other parts involved in verbal communication. Use of sentences and words will be tested, as well as seeing how the child produces sounds in general. This longer visit will include tests for expressive and spontaneous language, as well as a hearing test.

As an SLP learns a child’s particular case history and diagnoses the reasons behind why a child is having a communication challenge, they will discover the best method of treating the child. This will involve the family and the school as well as the child themselves. A good speech language pathologist knows that a challenge identified early on for a child is a challenge the child can be taught to overcome. With help from teachers, parents and other critical social systems, the child may regain or develop successful communication skills.

An SLP placed in the school system can help identify challenges with communication, language and speech disorders early on. Given the nature of their strong education and certification requirements, they come very highly trained and experienced already. In countries like Canada, one in ten citizens is living with a communication disorder. Early diagnosis and personal treatment options are the best way to resolve language and speech disorders. This is exactly what an SLP is trained for and prepared to do in a school.

Bedwetting is such an embarrassing condition that can cause a child to become withdrawn. The hardest for the child is that they have no control over the situation. Many parents that are not aware of this put additional pressure on the child, which does not help at all.

The thing a parent must understand is that a child wants to stop wetting their bed even more than their parents do. A little understanding can lessen the stress of the situation.

Wetting the bed is primarily caused by the inability to control the bladder. This condition is usually manageable after a child reaches the age of 5. If bedwetting still persist after that point, then it is a time for a parent to take this problem really seriously.

Trying to find a bedwetting cure after a child reaches 5 years old can cause a lot of frustration. This is the time to start the process of locating the cause of the problem.

There are several reasons why a child may suffer from bedwetting. It can stem from the parents, their hormones or sometimes it can occur due to anxiety. Whatever the reasons enuresis(medical term for bedwetting) keeps a bedwetting sufferer from being able to stop themselves from releasing their urine in mid sleep.

There a several different natural cures that can work for many children with bedwetting issues. The worse thing a parent can do however is get frustrated and start blaming the child.

The extracurricular guilt that is put on a child will actually make it worse for any bedwetting cures to work. This guilt can also turn to emotional problems in the future.

If you have been going through the wet nights with your child than you will glad to know that there are ways to solve the issue. It can all end rather quickly, but it will take a little effort on your part.

Before you let dissatisfaction make you lose hope get the solution to bed wetting by checking adult bedwetting for help.

by Amy Gibson

Believe it or not, constipation toddler problems are one of the most frustrating yet common problems parents are forced to deal with. There are typically four reasons your child is suffering from constipation pain:

* Consuming food that don’t contain enough fibers * Drinking more milk than the recommended daily amount (12-16 oz.) * Not drinking enough water * Waiting to long to go to the bathroom, or ignoring it all together

And here’s the kicker. Once you start recognizing the constipation symptoms your child suffers, you’ll also start noticing that they are holding bowel movements. The reason being is that their stools have become hard and painful and they end up holding it in to avoid the pain.

You want to learn what constipation treatment will help your toddler regain soft comfortable stools again? Stay with me and read on.

First of all you should start focusing on what your toddler is eating and drinking during the day.

Meaning:

1. Juice, milk and water – make sure you are giving your toddler enough. Dehydration will make stools harder, especially during hot weather.

The best way to check if your toddler has enough to drink is checking how often it urinates. If your child goes to the toilet at least once every three hours you’re good.

2. Load up on the fiber. Remember, fresh fruits and vegetables are high in fiber. Your child needs three servings of vegetables a day along side of two servings of fruit.

If your child is a picky eater, try a variety of breakfast bars and cereals rich in fiber. Plus giving him or her apples, bananas and peanut butter can help end constipation toddler issues.

Another way of getting the stool absorb more water is by giving your child supplemental fiber like Metamucil. This will help the fecal matter to flow gently through the colon.

3. You could give your child 2 tsps of vegetable oil every day. This will add a coating to the stool which helps it slide through the intestines much easier.

Increase by 1tsp every other day until your childs stool is soft and the rectum has healed. Understand that mineral oil will taste disgusting to your child, so mix it with a shake, juice, ice cream or even Jell-O.

4. Get into the routine of having your child sit on the toilet for 5 to 10 minutes after eating. Its important that your child get out of the habit of resisting the urge to go to the bathroom due to the pain. This only makes stools harder.

When you follow these guidelines you wont have to battle with constipation toddler issues for much longer. More fiber, avoid dehydration, mineral oil and setting a new bathroom routine are all you may need to give your child a sense of relief and comfort.

This mental illness is a very complex disease with different symptoms — and types. When we talk about this disease, its main signs are unpredictable shifting of emotions and moods from high (mania), low (depression) and the middle hippo mania. The severity of this mental illness can vary from severe to mild with certain periods when there are no signs showing at all (normal).

Bipolar Signs

One thing that we must be clear on is patients with this depressive disease don’t all go through the same bipolar symptoms in its strength, mood swings and length of time with its moods. Depending on each patient, this mental disease differs according to each individual illness. We are all different and because of that, this bipolar depression may show itself quite differently in each individual or tend to show itself differently on the same individual over time. Because depression is common and serious, it’s very critical that as soon as signs are seen – for patients to seek diagnosis from the nearest psychiatrist.

There are many symptoms to depression and they are similar for severe depression. Symptoms include: increased or decreased sleep, decreased interest, feelings of guilt, decreased energy, decreased concentration, decreased or increased appetite, changes in motor activity and suicidal thoughts or plans.

Children with Bipolar

It is important for all those working with young children, both parents and school staff, to familiarize themselves with the range of bipolar disorder symptoms. When the important people in a child’s life are able to recognize early-onset bipolar disorder, fast action in the form of diagnosis and treatment can be taken. When everyone works together in a program for the child with behavioral, academic or social problems there is a good chance of successful treatment.

Seeking Treatment

The usual treatment for this illness may include mood stabilizing drugs and counseling. It is very important that victims of bipolar learn about their prescribed drugs and its possible bad effects. There must be a very reliable way of taking their drugs efficiently and taking it daily, even when the victims feel better and stable so as to prevent a relapse in the illness. Monitoring of mood must be constantly done by the bipolar patient, a member of the family or a close friends to stop severe episodes and moods from happening or patients will end up in hospital. Sleeping patterns, their behaviors, and loss or gaining of appetite must be closely watched as well. All patients must try and avoid the use of alcohol, illicit drugs like marijuana and other drugs, which can make bipolar symptoms worse. Living a very healthy lifestyle is important with a well balanced diet, exercise regularly and enough sleep. This is done with the aim of lowering the stress level to help patients control and improve their illness and quality of life.

As an advocate he is willing to share some FREE information and findings on bipolar disorder symptoms and bipolar symptoms.

There are so many types of diagnoses out there for bad child behavior. We’ve all heard of ADD (Attention deficit disorder) and the more recently introduced ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). Well now there is a new disorder called ODD.

The ODD acronym stands for “Oppositional Defiant Disorder”, which is “a disruptive behavior disorder of children” by definition. How nice that kids who used to be called naughty and later just plain bad now have an official label! Notice that the definition leaves much up to the interpretation, and dare I say imagination, of the diagnosing therapist.

How about these main symptoms of ODD:

* Negativity

* Defiance

* Refusal to comply with adult requests or rules

* Negativity

* Hostility towards authority figures

* Frequent temper tantrums

* Deliberate annoyance of other people

* Blaming others for mistakes or misbehavior

* Blaming others for mistakes or misbehavior

* Spiteful or vindictive behavior

* Aggressiveness toward peers

* Difficulty maintaining friendships

* Difficulty maintaining friendships

Hmmm… Now if you’re like me, you’re thinking, “Yeah, isn’t that just a regular ‘ol kid who needs a severe attitude adjustment”? The little-known truth is that these are psychiatric diagnoses, not medical diagnoses. And psychiatric conditions are difficult to diagnose or prove. There is no blood test or CAT scan that show real proof the “disease” exists. Psychiatrists and other health professionals rely on:

* Information gained from interviewing the child

* Information compiled from parents and teachers, etc. who may fill out forms or questionnaires

* Their clinical judgment and experience

If these things form the underlying data for arriving at an ODD diagnosis, isn’t there sure to be inconsistency from day to day and doctor to doctor? So many variables, including the mood and daily circumstances of both patient and physician are at play here.

So why are these psychiatric diagnoses being treated with medical drugs? It seems there should be an easier way to help a child behave better than to just automatically pull out a prescription pad. Treatments for ODD range from expensive therapy to expensive medications. However, if your child is showcasing the symptoms stated above, something obviously needs to be done to correct their behavior.

There are far better options than drugging your child. Did you know that there are parents out there who have successfully turned around their “bad” kids in a short amount of time without medicating them? It’s true! You may want to see what a parent like that has done and learn from their example before trying the drugs and professional therapy route. There are even parents who are willing to teach you what they did.

To teach creativity is thought not to be possible, but there are particular types of toys that are designed to help open the creative gates inside young children’s minds, providing them with the necessary tools to develop their own creative personality.

Creative toys provide children with the tools they need to make something of their own, which gives them an overwhelming sense of achievement and joy, particularly when they have physically created it themselves with their own two hands. The long term benefit that this will have on their minds creativity will be immense.

Some other toys allow children to be creative, such as figurines that allow the child to envision a scenario for the depicted character, but specific creative toys allow them to create something that did not exist before and the thrill of such achievement can aid the blossoming of further creativity later on in life.

It is not uncommon for children’s creative toys to be smaller, less complex versions of adults equipment. Examples of this are the toys that have been made by Discovery (the Discovery channel) such as the Sew Fun Sewing Machine and the Ultimate Pottery Wheel.

These are just simplified versions of a sewing machine and a pottery wheel, which in themselves are quite expensive and fairly hazardous pieces of equipment that are used by adults to express their own creativity. The children’s versions allow them to get exposure to these kinds of creative and artistic outlets early on in life.

There are toys that allow children to be creative, but are nowhere near as complex as the pottery wheel and sewing machine. These are toys such a sets of felt pens, paints or building blocks. Although these toys are catalysts for creativity, like the pottery wheel and sewing machine they only enlighten children to the visual arts. There are other creative toys that are designed to bring out different areas of creativity in young children.

In the last 10 years or so, digital creative toys have emerged such as those that allow children to interact with virtual pets or characters. This kind of toy can provide invaluable aid to young minds when developing a sense of creative responsibility, whilst in an environment free of consequences.

Creative toys therefore, are immeasurably better for your child’s development and creativity, not just while they are young, but in later life as well.

Picture Proud are one of the UK’s leading suppliers of toys and Toy Boxes. If you need to buy a great quality personalised wooden Toy Box as a gift or for any other reason, visit their website at http://www.pictureproud.co.uk.

It is important for bipolar patients to be aware of how they feel to be able to remain healthy. When many people have bipolar attacks or feel depressed too much time has passed to be able to treat the moodiness. Always look for any little variations such as a change in energy, thinking, moods and sleeping habits. Moving quickly and very soon for any problem might help you avoid several minimal mood alterations from becoming a very bad occurrence of bipolar maniac depression.

Always Know What are your Triggers ” The early warning signs

It is best to look and understand warning signs of an oncoming bipolar depressive episode. A great method is to create a check list of any symptoms that were common in your latest episode. It also helps to be alert to triggers, such as outside pressure that caused the issue. Some common triggers are:

Stress: from work or from families. Difficulties financially: because of the hopelessness feeling in bipolar depression ” it can add stress to a patient. Fighting and arguments: especially with your loved ones. Having problems in school or at work: relationships can suffer in these two different places. Seasonal changes: for some people these seasonal changes can also affect the hormones in the body. Not enough sleep: while getting enough sleep is recommended- lack of sleep can be a sign of what is to come.

Other Warning signs of Depression

I do not want to do gardening. I hate being around people. I long to have chocolate. I am having bad headaches. I have lost interest in everybody. I hate people bothering me. I just want to sleep, sleep and sleep even during the day.

The Warning Signs of Bipolar manic or Hippo manic symptoms:

I can read a lot of books all at once. I am unusually talkative . I easily getting angry. I am hungry even after a good meal. My friends tell me I am bad. I have lots of energy.

Create a Different Approach to Your Health

If you detect signs of bipolar manic or depression, there is no time to lose in treating the problem. You need to have a health care plan in mind and coping strategies will be very helpful until stability returns. The best strategy will take some trial and error. These are techniques that have been helpful for many people like:

Try and talk to a person who is supportive. Try and get good eight hours of rest. Try and not do too much activities. Find a support group and attend it. Be faithful to your psychiatrist or therapist. Be creative and do something fun.

Final Advise

While stress can initiate episodes of bipolar manic and bipolar depression, keeping the illness under control is very important. Important to know your limits, at home with family members, at work or in school. Finally do not take too much that you cant handle. Learn to look after yourself by taking time for yourself especially if you are starting to feel down.

It is really sad in our society today being so obsessed with “feeling good, looking good” and “performing well.” And because of that we have turned into a society of “medication freaks.” This article tries to outline some of the problems we as a society are faced with today when our child or members of our family have symptoms of bipolar.

Problem One – Outside Pressures

We are faced with big problems at school where teachers and everybody are trying to advise parents and those with the illness to go on medication. The problem is teachers would like to have children who are well behaved in their classroom. We seem to be self taught authorities” overnight and if that is not frightening enough, more than half of parents were told by smart people to put their children on special medication. The main reason these children were given drugs is because of outside pressures from these non professional people.

Second Problem ” Quick Fix

Instead of working at de-stressing our lives, we take a pill and if its not better in one hour, we double the dose. Actually we are not giving time for a headache to heal slowly. Or if our little son sneezes we rush for the childrens cough and cold medications. If they don’t like the flavor we must run out and get the right flavor. We don’t give the body a chance to work on what is causing the sneeze; its probably from some dust. Instead we pump the child up with every sort of medication.

Third Problem ” Wrong Diagnosis

For children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( ADHD), a lot of doctors are quick to prescribe strong drugs to young children. While this may cure the present symptom, most of the time other symptoms which were not there before surface, so more drugs. Its like a person swallowing a fly, she had to swallow the spider to catch the fly and swallow the rat to get rid of the spider, that is what the medications are for. Most doctors do not want to admit that they do not know what they are doing and so pump drug after drug, stimulants, antidepressants and antipsychotics into the chills body.

4th Problem ” Availability of Drugs

The easy excess of medication is part of the reason our society is mad with immediate gratification. Most of us (especially the rich), have the money and want it fixed NOW. We become very impatient with our body’s illness and so do not help the body use its own natural resources to fight whatever is causing the problem.

Fifth ” Money Obsession

We all want earn money including pharmaceuticals and so these big powerful companies are willing to sell their drugs no matter who is hurt in the process. Secondly some doctors know their real strength and weakness with bipolar medications but cannot admit it. While this may offend some, many times those who are making the medicine and those giving it are all driven by earning more money.

Parting words

After all that is said I believe that before we run of to get medications for our children, why don’t you sit down and try the non medication approach which many parents have proven successful. Do you want your child to be a walking chemist plus bipolar symptoms?

A dentist’s role is complex and can often vary. In short, he or she evaluates, diagnoses, prevents, and treats diseases, disorders and conditions related to the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and adjacent or associated structures. The dentist will work in conjunction with either or a combination of dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and dental therapists. A dentist might extract teeth, clean teeth, diagnose bite problems, provide dentures, insert new teeth, provide braces, diagnose and correct TMJ, add veneers, as well as a variety of other things related to dental health.

Everyone has a bad dentist story. Visiting a dentist in Lansing would have to be one of the most put-off tasks in the world. Many people wait until they have no choice but to rush off to whichever dentist is available at the time. This really shouldn’t be the way people do it and it puts added pressure on the dentist who then needs to try and find a way to squeeze an extra person into a busy schedule.

The best way to find the right dentist is to start looking long before you have an emergency. Advice from friends, family and colleagues can be of great assistance when looking for a good dentist. You can also try your state board and asking them some questions about a dentist you’re considering. Frequently asked questions include:

1. Does this dentist have a valid license? 2. How many years of experience does he/she have? 3. Has this dentist ever had any law suits against such as malpractice or any others filed against him or her? 4. Does he or she have a record of complaints? 5. If there are complaints, of what nature are they?

Once you’ve settled on a dentist it’s probably a good time to have a check- up. Check-ups and cleans should occur about every six months rather than waiting for something to go wrong. Regular cleaning and check-ups will help with the care of your teeth and allow your dentist to keep your teeth in really good condition.

Whether you have a sore tooth, want braces for your teenager, dentures or need a wisdom tooth examined it’s wise to have a good relationship already established with a dentist. Finding a Lansing dentist is as simple as looking through the local yellow pages.

If you want to search for your dentist 21st century style you can use the internet to research those in your area. While the internet might not seem like the sort of place you’d expect to find a dentist’s advertisement, you might be surprised. If they have a website, the information contained might also be very helpful.

by Andrew Mitchell

Sleepless nights, relentless bawling, and dirty diapers – all parents know the joys and tribulation new baby can bring into a family. Yet is can often come as a shock – especially to first-time parents – when the crying does not stop for hours, days, or even weeks on end. You begin to worry: does my child have colic?

What is colic?

Colic refers to the persistent and uncontrollable crying that an otherwise healthy infant undergoes, starting from two weeks after birth and possibly lasting to the fourth month. Babies with colic often have crying ’sessions’(usually at the same intervals during the day, such as in the mornings and evenings) that can last up to three hours. The colic stage very rarely persists after the fifth month, and many infants are reported undergo this stage. 10-15% of all infants get severe colic, whereas mild colic is more common at 40%. But do not fret: all colic cases, both mild and severe, are only temporary.

Causes

Although professionals are not certain as to the exact causes of colic, some evidence suggests that the disorder is related to digestive problems. Some professionals claim that colic is caused as a result of the baby’s intestines working too hard, resulting in painful cramps. Other doctors argue that the disorder is based on slow bowel moves which result in gas being trapped in the intestines, which can be very painful and leads to inflammation. Many osteopaths and other medical professionals still dispute the causes of colic, but where research has been conducted, it has emerged that there is no known definitive source.

Symptoms

Now you are probably wondering, ‘how do I know if my child has colic?’ There are a couple of key symptoms that can help you distinguish the disorder: The infant cries for long periods of time (up to three hours sessions) without being comforted by anything. This process repeats itself for days or weeks. Some infants release a lot of gas, which can be very painful The child is restless or visibly uncomfortable The baby pulls their thighs up to their abdomen and clenches their fists

Treatment & Prevention

There are several techniques that you as a parent can employ to make your child feel more comfortable. Osteopaths recommend the following: Try carrying the infant on a sling on your stomach. Your heartbeat, body heat and movement might make them feel more at ease. Gently massage the infant’s belly in slow circular movements.

If the problem continues to exist, you are advised to visit an osteopathic clinic. Here your precious baby can be examined more closely for any tensions in body, and can be given the extra attention it needs.

Seeing your child suffer is agonizing for any parent, especially when you do not know how to help them. However, with today’s effective osteopathic techniques, and with the knowledge that colic is only a fleeting stage in a child’s development, both you and your baby can finally get the full night’s rest that you desire and deserve.
